Transform Your Vision into Print: The Photo Book Workshop with Matthew Monteith

July 22nd – 26th, 2024

This unique workshop addresses the common challenge many artists face to curate and present their work in a format that tells a story and resonates with audiences. “The Photo Book” workshop, led by photographer Matthew Monteith, is tailored specifically for photographers and artists eager to transform their existing collections into a compelling, cohesive book. The course is divided into two parts: editing the sequence of the work and designing the book itself, and then producing a unique, hand-printed, hand-bound maquette. Special attention is paid to individual design elements, printing quality, and binding techniques. Students also engage in lectures and discussions on the history of photographic books.

Matthew Monteith, an accomplished artist with an MFA from Yale University School of Art and a rich history of accolades, including the Rome Prize, a Fulbright, and a Pollock-Krasner fellowship, brings unparalleled expertise to this workshop. His widely exhibited works and his monograph, Czech Eden, published by Aperture, stand as a testament to his mastery in the field. Currently a professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Monteith offers invaluable guidance and inspiration to all attendees.

Whether you aim to showcase your work in galleries, share it with friends and family, or prepare it for publication, “The Photo Book” provides the essential skills and insights needed to bring your vision to life.

Image Transfer and Collage: Paper, Fabric and Stencil – Kristy Deetz

August 19th – 23rd, 2024

In this exciting and experimental mixed-media acrylic painting workshop, participants explore the opaque and translucent possibilities of image transfer. Transferring images with various acrylic mediums onto paper and fabric uncovers dynamic associations between the images, patterns in the fabric, characteristics of the substrate, and the painted mark. Stencils and collage provide additional new approaches to layering and more ways to reveal and conceal surface, substrate, and ideas. Students generate new tools to add to their studio practice as well as plenty of time to experiment and push their imagery in new ways.

Kristy Deetz’s extensive exhibition record includes national and international venues. She received SECAC’s 2016 Award for Excellence in Teaching and a 2015 Silver Award from Graphic Design Annual, NY. Kristy was recently Erasmus Visiting Lecturer at the University of Kassel, Germany and artist-in-residence at Burren College of Art in Ireland.
