VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
Color: a workshop for artists and designers

Sep 13 - 24, 2021

Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 1-4PM MST

Concept

Based on David Hornung’s textbook Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers, this virtual class provides a deeper understanding of color and the confidence to use it in your work. Under expert guidance, students make a sequence of practical studies that reveal color structure, its relational behavior and useful strategies for color harmony. Class time is devoted to illustrated lectures, demonstrations and discussions of class work, facilitated via Zoom video conferencing. Because the class meets intermittently, there is ample time to complete assignments. This informative and relaxed course is an excellent choice for painters, textile artists, graphic designers and anyone who makes two-dimensional art.

This workshop meets via Zoom Video Conferencing software (download free from Zoom.com). An Anderson Ranch staff member co-teaches the class and coordinates the online platform. Further details will be emailed to registrants.

Media

All studies are smaller than 11 x 8.5” (letter size) and made with hand painted color swatches that are cut and collaged using glue sticks on card stock. Recommended paint is acrylic gouache (see materials list for specifics). The technique is simple, direct and requires no prior painting experience.

The Figure in Oil Paint

Julie Burleigh

Tuition $1,225
Code D0101-24

In this workshop, students engage in one of the most interesting and challenging pursuits in representational painting: working with the figure. From color mixing exercises to studies of proportion and composition, students learn to represent the figure quickly and convincingly with oil paint. Further emphasis on paint handling and brushwork helps students to become adept at basic oil painting techniques. In addition to painting from a model, students are guided to create engaging and expressive self-portraits. Even with no past experience, students come away from this workshop with a heightened understanding and skill of this popular but often challenging genre.

Painting as Metamorphosis: Observe, Examine, Create

Jody Guralnick

Tuition $1,225
Code D0102-24

This class immerses participants in the wild world around us to inspire the process of oil painting. Students examine nature firsthand, using magnifying loupes to inspect their subjects, contemplating life, growth, decay, and regeneration. Using nature as source material, participants read, discuss, observe, and embark on a painting journey. The emphasis of this workshop is to think about painting as a process and movement rather than a fixed form, depicting nature with paint without needing to reproduce observations in a literal way. Melding abstraction and representation, students discover and produce depth, allowing an image to float to the surface. They learn to develop form, mix color, and consider composition, all inspired by what we see around us.

Tuition $1,225
Code D0103-24

Make your imagery pop in this dynamic painting workshop open to all skill levels. Students are challenged to dive into acrylic on panel while embarking on an abstract approach to image making. Participants explore color theory, patterning methods, and how to use masking tape to create clean, sharp lines and angles. We investigate abstraction and find personal ways to create shape, consider composition and develop a sense of space. Emphasis is placed on hard/soft edge painting techniques and layering processes. Students are encouraged to let their creativity flow, while expanding their artistic techniques in this versatile and accessible painting medium.
