Contemporary Woodblock: Neither Fish Nor Fowl
Aug 14 - 18, 2023

Concept
Students of all levels engage in the physicality of woodblock carving and printing in this accessible and user-friendly printmaking workshop. They may embark on the exploration of narrative symbolism or simply the subject matter of flora and fauna to create a composition and tell a story. Blocks are hand-printed, and compositional emphasis is placed on the physical border of the block as well as the creation of pictorial space. We allow for a loose process of registration, focusing instead on imagery, pattern, surface, and experimentation with different substrates such as paper and fabrics.

Students are encouraged to work beyond the first layer of printed imagery to create a new body of work that extends in size and has no technical limitations. With a focus on color, shape, line, and pattern, the goal of this workshop is to further each student’s image vocabulary using printmaking and collage.

Large-Scale Woodblock with Mixed Media
Yashua Klos
Tuition $1,345
Code R1009-25
Explore the process of translating imagery into the dynamic mark-making intrinsic to the medium of woodblock printmaking and collage. We embark on combining elements of woodblock printmaking, drawing, cut paper, and other collage materials to produce complex and compelling imagery. Students add to their practice with a whole new toolbox of methods as well as new conceptual approaches to the woodblock medium. While the primary tenets of traditional block printing are covered, printmaking operates as a means to facilitate the student’s concept. Students gain knowledge of the fundamentals of woodblock printmaking: carving, reproduction, registration, and inking, as well as various collage applications to produce a multilayered surface.
