Concept

Anderson Ranch’s December Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques.

This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition.

*This studio session only accommodates work in drawing and painting. No other studios will be available for access. Painting and drawing studios are open 24 hours a day with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

  • Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects.
  • Participants who register for multiple consecutive weeks will gain access to the studios on weekends (with the exception of the machine rooms due to safety constraints.)
  • Private dorm rooms are available at Anderson Ranch for one, two or three weeks for an additional fee; click here to view December 2025 lodging options.

Media & Techniques

Please bring any materials or mediums you are comfortable working with.

Faculty

Lindsey Yeager

Studio Coordinator, Paint and Printmaking

Fueled by a need to find closure in a deteriorating world, Wisconsin-born Lindsey Yeager paints and illustrates connections between society and nature, between human and animal, translating and reframing human contexts into fearful, raw, and feral allegories. Lindsey received a BFA in New Studio Practice and Illustration from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2021 and she went on to win two Society of Illustrators awards and participate in the 2021-22 cycle of Plum Blossom Initiative’s Bridge Work residency. Her work has been shown at Var Gallery, Mana Contemporary, Soft Times Gallery, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and Society of Illustrators, among others. Lindsey is represented by Var Gallery in Milwaukee.

From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Experimental Collage

Holly Roberts

Tuition $1,480
Code P1531-25

The excitement of creating often stems from the unexpected—those moments that arise when applying new techniques or materials in innovative ways. In this workshop, artists eager to elevate their practice are invited to explore the art of collage by experimenting with various materials on flat surfaces. Participants go beyond simply gluing paper onto substrates; they engage in building dynamic surfaces that reflect a spirit of experimentation and risk-taking. Utilizing a diverse range of materials including photographs, paint, text, contact paper, parchment paper, and joint compound, participants discover new methods of transferring elements from one surface to another. The resulting collages not only culminate in finished images but also serve as gateways to unlocking the unconscious creative process. Artists emerge with works that are distinctly unique, pushing the boundaries of their artistic expression and propelling their practice to the next level. SPECIAL OFFER: Consider also attending Holly's Paint and Photography: the Perfect Marriage workshop the week prior to this one and save 20% off that second tuition. (This offer cannot be combined with any other offers, promotions or scholarships.)

Primarily working in the painting studios, students also learn to use the laser cutter and UV printer in the digital fabrication lab. Participants explore the role of texture and layers in their work through shadow, color, and surface. This course encourages playful and innovative ways to integrate two- and three-dimensional elements.

This course focuses on the line, color, structure, and form in relation to natural objects. Various experimental techniques and tools that can be utilized to create a finished painting are demonstrated. Activities include presentations of visual images, discussions of abstract painting, and student-instructor consultations.
