Exploring Color and Mark-Making Through Analog Silkscreen

Concept
This analog, yet contemporary, approach to silkscreen takes digital image processing and impeccable editioning practices and tosses them out the window. Students are encouraged to engage in direct mark-making on transparencies and challenge their color sensibilities through creating varied editions. These two expressive, spontaneous and nuanced approaches to the process not only lend themselves to unexpected and often painterly results; they focus on the formal qualities of image construction and deconstruction as well as provide a heightened awareness of color relationships. Students create their compositions from the local environment, source images, or invent them from the imagination.

Drew Bennett
Drew Bennett is a designer/builder, curator and creative director. He received his BA from Colorado College. Drew founded FB AIR, Facebook’s artist in residency program, where he worked with Katharina Grosse, Barry McGee, Alicia McCarthy and Tom Sachs. In 2015, Drew co-founded Starline Social Club in Oakland, CA.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Printmaking Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional fine art print studio designed to support immersive studio practice across traditional and contemporary print processes. The facility offers dedicated press areas, specialized equipment, and technical infrastructure for artists working in intaglio, relief, monotype, lithography, and experimental printmaking techniques.

Our Printmaking program fosters a supportive studio atmosphere where artists of all levels have the freedom to experiment and learn new techniques. Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga, and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, rags, hand tools, computers with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.

Monotype and Woodcut: Hand and Laser Cut Matrices

This rigorous, engaging, printmaking workshop explores color monoprint and woodcut processes using hand and laser-cut stencils and blocks to create one-of-a-kind and editioned prints. We begin with observational studies from the natural world and explore monotype with stencils and multiple plates. We then use the laser cutter to cut woodblocks and combine these puzzle block prints with hand carved marks, alternating between structure and improvisation. This back-and-forth serves as the format for the course as we combine multiple matrices in many ways.

Between the Mesh: The Hybrid Screen Print

Students explore a wide range of traditional and experimental screen printing techniques, examining the expressive potential of digital and mechanical mark-making, richly layered color, and dynamic variable editions. Processes covered include drawing fluid and screen-filler stencils, photo-chemical stencils created from both hand-drawn and digital imagery, monoprints/monotypes, and the integration of found collage materials — all paired with hybrid approaches that merge analog and digitally produced images.

Students have formal training in critical issues of 2-D art making, experience with public critiques and a solid portfolio of their artwork.

Students have advanced skill and knowledge of painting and drawing. Students are highly motivated and self-directed, have a minimum of five years experience in their field and have multiple portfolios of their artwork. Portfolio review is required for admittance to some Level IV classes.

Beyond Judgment: The Work of Critique

In Against Interpretation, Susan Sontag writes, "What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to See more, to Hear more, to Feel more." This community focused, discussion and critique-based workshop encourages artists to investigate their artistic intentions within a supportive environment of critical thinking, looking, and responding. As a cohort of artists who are active participants in the act of observation and interpretation, the intention is to expand one's understanding of how to speak about the work of our peers without judgment or categorization. Though this is not a traditional critique class, we focus on building skills in how to guide a studio visit with questions, avoiding art world sound bytes but rather spotlighting authentic and unique feedback. This workshop is for serious artists who are searching for community, dialogue, and honesty within a cohort. Participants are encouraged to bring physical work as well as digital images to share and discuss, with emphasis on awareness and being present among the group.
