January Studio Sessions: Painting & Drawing

Discover the versatility of steel in this mixed-media workshop exploring contemporary sculpture. Open to all experience levels, this course demonstrates how mastering a new process can unlock unimagined aesthetic possibilities. Beginners will learn fundamental techniques to cut, shape, and join steel, discovering the metal's ability to appear everything from aggressive and durable to delicate and organic. Experienced Artists new to sculpture will learn to translate their ideas into 3D compositions, practicing how to “draw in space” and ensure structural coherence from every angle. Seasoned Sculptors can push their boundaries by integrating steel with contrasting materials like wood, leather, cloth, or paper. Instruction is tailored through individual critiques, technical demonstrations, and group visual analysis. Whether you stick to traditional metalwork or experiment with mixed media, you are encouraged to work at the pace and style that best suits your interests.

Anderson Ranch’s January Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff and interns. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation, and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques. This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition. *Studios are open 24 hours a day and on weekends for students enrolled in multiple weeks, with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements. There are no staff hours or kiln-firing on weekends. IMPORTANT DETAILS: Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as five hours of weekly technical guidance in the Ranch’s state-of-the-art facilities. This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition. *Bench and gluing rooms open 24 hours a day. LIMITED machine tool room access from 9am – 5pm and evening open tool room hours 7pm – 9pm Monday through Thursday. Studio Sessions are available to artists with prior experience in woodworking, tools, and safety. All participants will be required to attend safety orientations for the facilities and specific tools they will use. they will use. TO APPLY: Portfolios will be accepted on a rolling basis. While not required, it is helpful to see an artist statement addressing the images you send.
