Concept
Anderson Ranch’s January Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques.
This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition.
*Studios are open 24 hours a day with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects.
Participants will have access to the studios on weekends throughout this four-week program (with the exception of certain equipment due to safety constraints.)
Private dorm rooms are available at Anderson Ranch for one, two, three, or four weeks for an additional fee; click here to view January 2027 lodging options.

Lindsey Yeager
Studio Coordinator, Paint and Printmaking
Lindsey Yeager paints and illustrates connections between society and nature, between human and animal, translating and reframing human contexts into fearful, raw, and feral allegories. Yeager received BFAs in New Studio Practice and Illustration from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Her work has been shown at Var Gallery, Mana Contemporary, Soft Times Gallery, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and Society of Illustrators, among others. Lindsey is represented by Var Gallery in Milwaukee, WI and works as the Studio Coordinator of Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch.

Workshop Details
Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Painting & Drawing Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Painting & Drawing Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive artistic practice across a wide range of media. The space provides dedicated work areas, natural light, and technical infrastructure for artists working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and drawing.

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Beyond Judgment: The Work of Critique

In Against Interpretation, Susan Sontag writes, "What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to See more, to Hear more, to Feel more." This community focused, discussion and critique-based workshop encourages artists to investigate their artistic intentions within a supportive environment of critical thinking, looking, and responding. As a cohort of artists who are active participants in the act of observation and interpretation, the intention is to expand one's understanding of how to speak about the work of our peers without judgment or categorization. Though this is not a traditional critique class, we focus on building skills in how to guide a studio visit with questions, avoiding art world sound bytes but rather spotlighting authentic and unique feedback. This workshop is for serious artists who are searching for community, dialogue, and honesty within a cohort. Participants are encouraged to bring physical work as well as digital images to share and discuss, with emphasis on awareness and being present among the group. Painting with Textiles

In this dynamic mixed-media textile and painting class, students incorporate painting and drawing vocabularies into a variety of textile media. Students are encouraged to translate their personal imagery into fiber paintings, exploring formal conversations including color, mark making, foreground/background, and conceptual questions about memory, presence, and absence. Surface texture, narrative, and atmosphere are explored through the combination of methods and techniques. This experimental workshop is an opportunity for students to add new image making approaches to their studio practices, including image transfers, painting, and textiles.

Water-Based Painting: An Exploration of Technique & Form

Through material exploration of water-based media, this workshop moves students from initial narrative concept to execution with the help of in-class discussion and the implementation of techniques pre-existing and newly formed. Participants learn the processes and methods for effective use of water-based media to create vibrant imagery in the studio, and to work swiftly and spontaneously on-site wherever our painting journeys may take us. The workshop is guided through demonstrations, lectures, and in-class painting time, as we work with feedback from the instructor and classmates to develop a rich and dynamic painting practice.
