Concept
Anderson Ranch’s January Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques.
This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition.
*Studios are open 24 hours a day and on weekends for students enrolled in multiple weeks, with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements.
IMPORTANT DETAILS: Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects. Private dorm rooms are available at Anderson Ranch for an additional fee; click here to view January 2027 lodging options. Breakfasts and dinners are included in the dorm fee. Lunches are included in the studio fees.

Lindsey Yeager
Studio Coordinator, Paint and Printmaking
Lindsey Yeager paints and illustrates connections between society and nature, between human and animal, translating and reframing human contexts into fearful, raw, and feral allegories. Yeager received BFAs in New Studio Practice and Illustration from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Her work has been shown at Var Gallery, Mana Contemporary, Soft Times Gallery, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and Society of Illustrators, among others. Lindsey is represented by Var Gallery in Milwaukee, WI and works as the Studio Coordinator of Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch.

Workshop Details
Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Painting & Drawing Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Painting & Drawing Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive artistic practice across a wide range of media. The space provides dedicated work areas, natural light, and technical infrastructure for artists working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and drawing.

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Painting: Observe, Absorb, Create
Jody Guralnick

Observe nature with fresh eyes, letting time slow to examine the wild world closely. Participants investigate nature firsthand, using magnifying loupes to inspect subjects, contemplating life, growth, decay, and regeneration, and — using the natural world as source material, we read, discuss, observe, and embark on a painting journey. The emphasis of this workshop is to think about painting as process and movement rather than fixed form, depicting nature with paint without needing to reproduce observations in a literal way. Melding abstraction and representation, students discover and produce depth, allowing an image to float to the surface. We learn to develop form, mix color, and consider composition, all inspired by what we see around us.

Students have formal training in critical issues of 2-D art making, experience with public critiques and a solid portfolio of their artwork.

Students have advanced skill and knowledge of painting and drawing. Students are highly motivated and self-directed, have a minimum of five years experience in their field and have multiple portfolios of their artwork. Portfolio review is required for admittance to some Level IV classes.

New Avenues and Investigations

Master Class In this master class workshop for advanced painters, students investigate their intentions and concerns within their painting practice while working at a rigorous pace in the studio. Class consists of one-on-one and group critiques, discussion, and ample studio time to make new inquiries into their work. Participants are challenged to explore new avenues and dive deep into the content and methods behind their practice. Topics for discussion include content, color and gesture, and symbolism. Students are asked to bring a digital portfolio of recent work to share with the class.

Drawing: Beyond the Fear of a Blank Page

Grasp the fundamentals of one of the most useful studio tools: drawing. Whether a novice painter or a beginning sculptor, students in this workshop focuses on several elemental drawing techniques to help strengthen your creative base. We explore drawing from observation and photographic sources, with an emphasis on mixed-media and drawing strategies designed to decrease the intimidation factor. We delve into techniques ranging from charcoal drawing to collage to pen on paper. Concentrating on a strong sketchbook practice and learning how to look, students focus on ways to approach complicated drawings regardless of skill level and get beyond the fear of the blank page.
