Master Class: Advanced Printmaking: Topics and Techniques

Concept
This unique opportunity for advanced printmakers creates a forum for dialog on curating practice to give strong direction to artistic work. Artists are invited to work on self-directed projects in the printmaking area of their choosing while receiving technical support in tandem with critical feedback. Opportunities for technical demonstrations, group critique, and one-on-one mentorship make up the structure of this master class. *Brian Shure will be present for the entire duration of the workshop; Meleko Mokgosi will join daily from 9am – 3pm.
Portfolios will be accepted on a rolling basis. Instructions on how to submit your portfolio are as follows:
- Submit digital images of your work in one single PDF (as opposed to individual JPG attachments) via email directly to Lindsey Yeager, Studio Coordinator of Painting, Drawing & Printmaking, at [email protected]
- The single PDF must be less than 10 MB to be considered.
- Include 5-10 images of your work with image identification that lists the title, media, dimensions and year of each image. While not required, it is helpful to see an artist statement addressing the images you send. Include “Advanced Portfolio Review” in the subject line of your email, as well as the title of the workshop for which you are applying.
- Please provide a phone number where you can be reached and a link to your website. Submissions that do not follow the requested directions will not be reviewed.
If you are accepted, a deposit of $650 will be required within one week of notification of acceptance to hold your place. Housing will be assigned on a space-available basis upon enrollment.

Meleko Mokgosi
Meleko Mokgosi—born in Francistown, Botswana and living and working in Wellesley, MA—is an artist, Associate Professor and director of graduate studies at the Yale School of Art, and director of the Interdisciplinary Art and Theory Program. He received his MFA from the Interdisciplinary Studio Program at the University of California Los Angeles in 2011. He participated in the Rauschenberg Residency at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Captiva, FL in 2015, and the Artist in Residence Program at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY in 2012.
Brian Shure
Master Printer-in-Residence
Brian Shure is the Master Printer-in-Residence of Anderson Ranch Editions. Brian Shure is represented by Planthouse Gallery in New York, where he curated the 2018 show Bathing. He has taught at RISD, Brown, and Cornell and conducted classes in China, Japan, Mexico, and Germany.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

In our effort to foster a stronger sense of community and accessibility at Anderson Ranch, we include the welcome dinner and all lunches as part of course fees for summer workshop students. Printmaking Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional fine art print studio designed to support immersive studio practice across traditional and contemporary print processes. The facility offers dedicated press areas, specialized equipment, and technical infrastructure for artists working in intaglio, relief, monotype, lithography, and experimental printmaking techniques.

Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga, and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, rags, hand tools, computers with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.

Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Experimental Monoprint with Laser Cutters

Explore a playful approach to making layered, hand-pulled monoprints through this fun, experimental workshop. We learn various ways to bring technology into our art-making practice, using the laser cutter as a flexible tool throughout the process. We discover how to turn drawings into laser-cut paper stencils, which we then use both in the printing process and as collage elements. We conclude by cutting our plexi plates into jigsaw-style pieces for more printing options. Our goals are to increase skills, exchange ideas, and expand our creative practices.

Oil and Water: Collagraph, Stencils, and Monoprint

This versatile and dynamic monoprint workshop utilizes both water-based and oil-based media, printing from collagraph plates and stencils. Participants create textured plates by building up varied surfaces with acrylic mediums and more traditional, drypoint Plexiglas plates, combined with collage materials and Duralar stencil shapes. These inspiring techniques work well with both abstract and representational imagery, adding new methods and visual effects to the printmaking practice. Each student is guided individually by the instructor, and offers group demos daily.

Investigations in Lithography: Honing the Essentials

Master Class In this two-week workshop, advanced printmakers explore direct mark-making on ball-grained aluminum plates as well as photographic and hand-drawn imagery with film positives on pre-sensitized photo plates. Developing an understanding of efficient methods for processing and printing are the foundation to producing consistent lithographic editions. Prior background in lithography or extensive work in other printmaking media will serve as the basis for image preparation, plate processing and printing techniques. This workshop does not require that students be proficient in lithography, but they must have significant experience in the field of printmaking.
