Master Class: Innovations in Lithography

Concept
In this workshop, advanced printmakers explore photographic and hand-drawn imagery with film positives on pre-sensitized photo plates as well as direct mark making on ball-grained aluminum plates. Prior background in lithography or extensive work in other printmaking media is the foundation for exploration of image preparation, plate processing, and printing techniques to develop an understanding of efficient methods for production of consistent lithographic editions.
*This workshop does not require that students be proficient in lithography, but they must have significant experience in the field of printmaking.

Brian Shure
Master Printer-in-Residence
Brian Shure is the Master Printer-in-Residence of Anderson Ranch Editions. Brian Shure is represented by Planthouse Gallery in New York, where he curated the 2018 show Bathing. He has taught at RISD, Brown, and Cornell and conducted classes in China, Japan, Mexico, and Germany.
Valpuri Remling
Valpuri Remling is the master printer and workshop manager at Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque NM. Prior to relocating to the US, she worked at Helsinki Litho, a lithography workshop in Helsinki, Finland, as a master printer and artist, simultaneously teaching planographic methods at the Academy of Fine Arts. Remling holds an MFA in printmaking from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and has studied in the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

Printmaking

Our Printmaking program fosters a supportive studio atmosphere where artists of all levels have the freedom to experiment and learn new techniques. Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga, and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, rags, hand tools, computers with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.
At Anderson Ranch, the process of printmaking honors tradition, innovation, community and collaboration. We invite you to explore, experiment and expand your visual expression in this captivating environment.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

In our effort to foster a stronger sense of community and accessibility at Anderson Ranch, we include the welcome dinner and all lunches as part of the tuition for summer workshop students. Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Large-Scale Woodblock with Mixed Media

Explore the process of translating imagery into the dynamic mark-making intrinsic to the medium of woodblock printmaking and collage. We embark on combining elements of woodblock printmaking, drawing, cut paper, and other collage materials to produce complex and compelling imagery. Students add to their practice with a whole new toolbox of methods as well as new conceptual approaches to the woodblock medium. While the primary tenets of traditional block printing are covered, printmaking operates as a means to facilitate the student’s concept. Students gain knowledge of the fundamentals of woodblock printmaking: carving, reproduction, registration, and inking, as well as various collage applications to produce a multilayered surface.

Students have some formal training in digital fabrication, experience with a variety of materials and fabrication processes, and know how to use CNC, 3-D printers, or laser cutters competently and safely. Students have a portfolio of their work.

Master Class: Career Momentum: Professional Practices for Artists

Artists at all stages of their careers often wish they could have more guidance when approaching galleries, making sales, navigating and choosing exhibitions in which to participate, and even writing off sales and donations. This nuts-and-bolts workshop gets to the core of these questions, while at the same time mentoring artists to consider their goals within the art world and find the tools to achieve them. Every artist has a different trajectory, but there are many common struggles and questions along the way, several of which form the content of this course designed to inform, energize, and empower. This workshop takes place in the painting building but invites artists of all disciplines to apply.

Water-Washed Mokuhanga & Stencil

In this multifaceted printmaking workshop, students discover that the water-washed mokuhanga and stencil printing processes on washi paper have the exciting possibility of expanding the surface and dimensional quality of image making. In the mokuhanga printing process, the water-washed pigments on the carved woodblock are pressed down into the washi paper. The water-washed pigments are applied to the washi paper directly through the stencil, which prints the raised surface. Students learn this process including carving and hand printing to create and experience the result: a beautiful, multilayered, and luminous print.
