Liz Ferrill
Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing & Printmaking; Artists-in-Residence Program; Critical Dialogue Program
Liz Ferrill is the Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch. She received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has had solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including in Aspen, Nashville, Omaha, New York City, and Berlin, Germany.

Ruby Neri
Ruby Neri (b. 1970, San Francisco) draws upon 20th-century West Coast traditions and a global catalogue of art historical and anthropological modes. She depicts the human body as a porous instrument of pleasure, terror, and everything in between, placing her in a lineage of Los Angeles-based artists like Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy. Her focus on hand-driven craft connects her to the Bay Area Figurative and Funk movements. Over the last 20 years, Neri has been a leading figure in the revival of ceramics as a contemporary art medium. Her vessels evoke earthy tactility and psychological intimacy, while her use of sprayed glazes links her ceramics to the street art she produced in the late 1990s as a member of the San Francisco-based Mission School, blending contemporary urban art with the archaic power of pre-historical wall-painting and object-making.

Impressions on Clay: Merging Photography, Painting, and Ceramics
Yana Payusova
Tuition $1,380
Code P0923-25
In a contemporary art world where "mixed media" is increasingly prominent, exploring the development of 2D imagery for 3D forms is a timely approach in ceramics. This immersive workshop delves into the intersection of photography, screen printing, and ceramics, encouraging students to merge and expand these mediums in innovative ways. With a focus on narrative development, participants work with personal, found, or generated images to create visual stories. Emphasizing the conceptual development of photographic imagery and pictorial illustrations, students design and produce screen-printed decals for transferring onto fired ceramic surfaces. During their studio experience, students are welcome to hand build day one and then focus on image preparation and design and transfer. This workshop provides artists with the tools to seamlessly integrate 2D and 3D elements in their work.

The Indifferent Landscape
Brad Kahlhamer
Tuition $1,415
Code D0918-25
This mixed media workshop focuses on landscape with an emphasis on incorporating the figure into the landscape narrative using ink, paint, drawing materials, and sketchbooks. The class heads outdoors for at least two of the workshop days, then returns to the classroom to continue to work and discuss the figure, composition, and landscape in depth, striving to create an artistic discourse that is clear, authentic, and earnest. Students engage as a group and in one-on-one conversations and are encouraged to explore the historical and cultural context from which their work emerges. Emphasis is on creating with the confidence to make the work that compels students to take possession of their ideas and follow their obsessions.

Abstracting Reality
Rico Gatson
Tuition $1,415
Code D0917-25
In this acrylic painting workshop, the mysterious and powerful realm of abstraction—and how it can be used as a visual tool when merged with representationalism—becomes accessible. We delve into the basic visual elements of abstraction through the exploration of pattern, color, composition, and fragmentation. Advanced students are encouraged to experiment with surface texture and alternative painting materials as well, and to incorporate representational elements such as photographs and figurative painting. These dynamic combinations result in bold and exciting images that use abstraction as a device to interrupt reality and present it in unique and surprising ways.
