Ruby Neri

Ruby Neri (b. 1970, San Francisco) draws upon 20th-century West Coast traditions and a global catalogue of art historical and anthropological modes. She depicts the human body as a porous instrument of pleasure, terror, and everything in between, placing her in a lineage of Los Angeles-based artists like Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy. Her focus on hand-driven craft connects her to the Bay Area Figurative and Funk movements. Over the last 20 years, Neri has been a leading figure in the revival of ceramics as a contemporary art medium. Her vessels evoke earthy tactility and psychological intimacy, while her use of sprayed glazes links her ceramics to the street art she produced in the late 1990s as a member of the San Francisco-based Mission School, blending contemporary urban art with the archaic power of pre-historical wall-painting and object-making.

Mixed Media: Painting and Collage

Roberto Juarez

Tuition $1,415
Code D1431-25

Small-scale collage is an exciting process for creating ideas and color relationships that can develop into large paintings and collages. Beginning by working in a smaller format facilitates fluid decision making regarding composition, color choices, and surface. Using collage and painting in combination, students learn the process of making a series of dynamic studies for larger works that resonate. Emphasis is on experimentation, creating depth, making a body of cohesive work, and discovering ways to enhance surface texture.

Paint and Photography: the Perfect Marriage

Holly Roberts

Tuition $1,480
Code P1436-25

This workshop introduces students to expressive painting techniques, using abstraction as a foundation for collage. Emphasizing spontaneity, students will learn to relinquish preconceptions about paint application, allowing the medium to guide the creative process and reveal unexpected surfaces and textures. Once their abstract paintings are complete, students will explore various collage techniques, incorporating personal photographs, found materials, prints, drawings, and other adherable elements. The abstract paintings will serve as the foundation, influencing the composition and direction of the collages. Techniques covered in this workshop include polymer transfers, water-based paint applications, proper adhesion methods, contact paper transfers, the integration of joint compound, and strategies for composing and constructing layered images. SPECIAL OFFER: Consider also attending Holly's From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Experimental Collage workshop the week after this one and save 20% off that second tuition. (This offer cannot be combined with any other offers, promotions or scholarships.)

Expanding Image to Form with Digital Fabrication

Letha Wilson

Tuition $1,415
Code D1532-25

In this workshop, students experiment with methods of representation and abstraction using an interdisciplinary approach that embraces painted and/or photographic images, physical layers, repurposed materials, and sculptural forms. Analog methods of image manipulation such as cutting, folding, and photo transfer are taught in combination with digital techniques. Primarily working in the painting studios, students also learn to use the laser cutter and UV printer in the digital fabrication lab. Participants explore the role of texture and layers in their work through shadow, color, and surface. This course encourages playful and innovative ways to integrate two- and three-dimensional elements.
