Concept
This rigorous, engaging, printmaking workshop explores color monoprint and woodcut processes using hand and laser-cut stencils and blocks to create one-of-a-kind and editioned prints. We begin with observational studies from the natural world and explore monotype with stencils and multiple plates. We then use the laser cutter to cut woodblocks and combine these puzzle block prints with hand carved marks, alternating between structure and improvisation. This back-and-forth serves as the format for the course as we combine multiple matrices in many ways.

Trace, stencil, additive and reductive monotype, transferring images, preparing files, cutting stencils and blocks with the laser cutter, puzzle wood block prints, carving, color ink mixing and layering, printing oil-based inks using a press and by hand, pochoir techniques using gouache, registration techniques, chiné collé, editioning and unique prints

Jean Gumpper
Jean Gumpper is Senior Lecturer Emerita at Colorado College, Her color woodcut prints are widely exhibited by national and international galleries and are in museum, university, and private collections across North America, Europe and Asia. Jean has participated in residencies including the Anderson Center, Goldwell Museum, Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Parks, Mackinac Island State Park, Ucross Foundation, and Art Print Residence in Spain.

- Carving tool set, recommendations attached
- A "v" gouge, a "u" gouge, and a small flat chisel - these tools can be found within the recommended sets

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Printmaking Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional fine art print studio designed to support immersive studio practice across traditional and contemporary print processes. The facility offers dedicated press areas, specialized equipment, and technical infrastructure for artists working in intaglio, relief, monotype, lithography, and experimental printmaking techniques.

Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga, and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, rags, hand tools, computers with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.

Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.

Anderson Ranch’s January Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques. This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition. *Studios are open 24 hours a day and on weekends for students enrolled in multiple weeks, with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements. IMPORTANT DETAILS: Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects. Private dorm rooms are available at Anderson Ranch for an additional fee; click here to view January 2027 lodging options. Breakfasts and dinners are included in the dorm fee.
