Processing and Laser: Creative Code to Wood Panel

Concept
Dive into the possibilities of the computer’s extraordinary feats in our digital age. This workshop is ideal for students looking to expand their control animations and processing skills as well as those wanting to use creative coding exported to a laser cutter. Participants work with Sublime Text 3 to edit code using Processing and the HYPE Framework. Throughout the week, efficient production techniques are explored.

Joshua Davis
Joshua Davis is an award-winning designer, technologist, author, and artist in new media and is acclaimed for his role in designing the visualization of IBM’s Watson, the intelligent computer program capable of answering questions for the quiz show “Jeopardy!” His work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the Design Museum in London, le Centre Pompidou in France, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, MoMA PS1 in New York, the Cooper-Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum, and others.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Photography & New Media Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Photography & New Media Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive photographic and digital media practice. The facility provides dedicated workspaces, critique areas, and technical infrastructure for artists working in traditional photography, digital imaging, video, and experimental new media.

Photography has always been a vital part of Anderson Ranch, one in which students explore visual storytelling through a variety of contexts and concepts. The program has uniquely evolved to focus on both traditional photography and new media— making it one of the only workshop settings of its kind. Three floors of the Fischer Photography Center house state-of-the-art equipment, including three photography studios, two Mac labs, a traditional darkroom, and a lighting studio with strobe and continuous lighting for photography and video.
All photography workshops are rooted in the same idea—powerful art requires rigorous inquiry of techniques and ideas. We focus on technical skills, content and critical dialog. Students have access to color-managed media labs equipped with 24-inch iMacs, flatbed and film scanners, Epson printers, and cutting-edge software including Adobe Creative Cloud. When appropriate, students utilize strobe and tungsten lighting equipment, seamless backdrops, green screen, audio and video recording equipment and Epson large-format printers.
The Ranch Photography and New Media team creates an inspiring environment, allowing artists of all levels to explore lens-based media and the journey of artistic discovery in the unparalleled setting of the Colorado Rockies.

Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.

More Than Words: Photography as Creative Nonfiction

This workshop asks students to engage in close readings of image, sound, and text in order to develop their own creative practice. Authors and artists examined include Roy DeCarava, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Dawoud Bey, Tina Campt, Baldwin Lee, Susan Sontag, James Baldwin, Endia Beal, and Joni Mitchell. Students will explore questions such as, How are history, region, identity, social location, sound, and disposition communicated through image? How can narrative be a co-creative endeavor alongside image? How does the body of the photographer figure in images even when not visible? What ethical principles ought to guide visual and narrative storytelling? Class sessions will include writing exercises and peer critiques.

Introduction to Wetplate

Photography is by definition an act of time travel, but this workshop in wet-plate collodion process adds a unique and creative aspect to modern practice. The course explores making tintypes, glass negatives, and ambrotypes with a variety of formats, including 6x6 plates made with Holga cameras and using supplied 4x5 cameras. Whether new to the process or honing basic skills, this workshop is a great fit for anyone interested in early hand-crafted photography.

Between the Mesh: The Hybrid Screen Print

Processes covered include drawing fluid and screen-filler stencils, photo-chemical stencils created from both hand-drawn and digital imagery, monoprints/monotypes, and the integration of found collage materials — all paired with hybrid approaches that merge analog and digitally produced images.
