Discover the Workshop
This rigorous, engaging, printmaking workshop combines monoprint and woodcut processes with a digital component. We incorporate laser-cut stencils and wood blocks together with painterly and carved marks to create images. We begin with observational studies from the natural world and explore multiple plate monotype methods. Woodcut techniques including laser-cut blocks are then added to layer transparent and opaque color. We make both editioned and unique prints, alternating between structure and improvisation. This back-and-forth serves as the format for the course as we combine multiple matrices in many ways.

Meet Your Faculty
Jean Gumpper
Jean Gumpper is Senior Lecturer Emerita at Colorado College, Her color woodcut prints are widely exhibited by national and international galleries and are in museum, university, and private collections across North America, Europe and Asia. Jean has participated in residencies including the Anderson Center, Goldwell Museum, Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Parks, Mackinac Island State Park, Ucross Foundation, and Art Print Residence in Spain.

- 7+ sheets of BFK Rives, 22" x 30", white**
- Cheap brushes**
- Cheap watercolor or gouache set
- Fine point sharpie**
- Masking tape**
- Mechanical pencil**
- Set of water soluble Caran d’Ache crayons
- Sketchbook**
- Washi papers (ex: mulberry, kitakata, gampi)**
- Wood carving tools, suggestions below (minimum "v" gouge, "u" gouge, and a small chisel)
- X-acto #1 knife**
- Prohibited supplies: power tools, torches, spray paint, encaustic, turpentine, resin, plastisol, any solvent that isn’t low VOC

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Printmaking Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional fine art print studio designed to support immersive studio practice across traditional and contemporary print processes. The facility offers dedicated press areas, specialized equipment, and technical infrastructure for artists working in intaglio, relief, monotype, lithography, and experimental printmaking techniques.

Our Printmaking program fosters a supportive studio atmosphere where artists of all levels have the freedom to experiment and learn new techniques. Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga, and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, rags, hand tools, computers with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.

Anderson Ranch Arts Center is a historic, rustic campus that features gravel pathways and uneven terrain that may pose challenges for individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Anderson Ranch is happy to extend a 20% tuition discount* for summer one- or two-week adult printmaking workshops for SGC International members at the advocate membership level or above. Please email [email protected] with your SGCI membership information prior to registering and we will send you a promo code to complete registration with your discount applied. You are also welcome to call 970-924-5089 to register after verifying your membership with us. **Please note this discount must be approved prior to registering and cannot be applied retroactively. SGCI discount does not apply to Advanced Mentored Studies programs or Destination Workshops, nor can it be combined with any other discount, scholarship or special offer.
Studio access, shipping, campus policies, and other information for workshop participants.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please read the workshop description carefully to make sure the workshop is appropriate for your skill level. You must be at least 18 years old to attend an adult workshop.
Payment: A deposit of $650 per workshop is required to reserve a space (with or without housing). The balance of tuition, studio and registration fees, and housing is due 60 days prior to the start of your first workshop and is automatically charged to the credit card used for the deposit.
Cancellations: With at least 60 days’ notice, we will refund your payments less a cancellation fee of $250 per workshop. Cancellations made within 60 days of the start of your workshop will result in a full forfeiture. Housing cancellations follow the same 60-day notice, less $200 per week of housing reserved.
Transfers to another workshop or housing option are possible, space permitting, with at least 60 days’ notice and a $25 transfer fee.

Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.
