Adventures in Animation

Concept
This workshop explores storytelling techniques through the worlds of animation and stop motion. Students produce their own movie using the playful art of stop-motion animation, creating sets and characters with a variety of material resources. The second half of the week is devoted to the emerging field of interactive animation. Students learn how to write processing code to create digital animations that can actually react to their surroundings.
Faculty

Samantha Ticknor
Sam Ticknor is a Pittsburgh-based studio artist specializing in drawing and painting. She creates imaginative works on paper using watercolor paints and inks. Currently, she is crafting paintings for an upcoming picture book. Sam also has a passion for teaching and has led art courses at schools, camps, and universities in Aspen, Pittsburgh, and New York City. She is happy to be returning to Anderson Ranch for her eighth summer of workshops!

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.
NEW: Tuition includes a welcome dinner and lunches. In our effort to foster a stronger sense of community and accessibility at Anderson Ranch, we include the welcome dinner and all lunches as part of the tuition for summer workshop students. Our hope is that this adjustment will encourage all students to come together to share meals and engage in meaningful conversations. The Ranch Café Meal Plan, which is included with Room and Board fees, strives to provide healthy, creative meals that will nourish your artistic creativity. Learn more.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritize the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Into the Earth: Art Inspired by Geology

Let’s dig into the wonders of our planet! In this fun, hands-on workshop, young artists explore rocks, crystals, and fossils through creative projects. Kids will make textured clay fossils, paint sparkling crystal-inspired watercolors, and sculpt their own tiny mountains and volcanoes. Along the way, they’ll learn about the layers of the earth, erosion, and the swirling colors of agate slices using marbled painting techniques. Get ready to create, explore, and discover the magic of geology through art!

Step into the world of contemporary art by becoming a living masterpiece! In this dynamic workshop, students explore creativity through the creation of fantastical masks and costumes using a variety of mixed media. From paper mâché to textured fabrics—and even everyday materials like cardboard—students are encouraged to experiment and let their imaginations run wild. Along the way, they learn basic sewing and mending techniques to bring their wearable art to life. The week culminates on Friday with a stunning runway show, where students proudly showcase their creations in a dazzling presentation for friends and family!

Shutterbugs: A Photography Journey for Kids

From the fascinating history of image-making and practicing cool techniques like cyanotypes all the way to today’s digital photography, this course is a journey through time and creativity. Using the beautiful Anderson Ranch campus as inspiration, students create one-of-a-kind photographs and prints that might just ignite a lifelong passion for image-making.
