Experimental Etching on Copper: texture & surface
Jun 21 - 25, 2021
9AM-5PM
Concept
Embark upon an exploration of textures, surface treatments and resists for etching on copper. Discover experimental pattern, mark-making and effects that can only be achieved through the material process of etching. During this exciting intaglio workshop students examine the possibilities and limitations of aquatint techniques, chine collé and other traditional printmaking techniques. Students also find ways to manipulate the surface of their prints through non-traditional methods and processes, coming away with innovative new ideas and imagery.
Media

Printmaking
Discover the exciting possibilities of this historically rooted medium. Our Printmaking program fosters a supportive studio atmosphere where artists of all levels have the freedom to experiment and learn new techniques. Summer 2021 print workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, palettes, rags, hand tools, power tools, computers with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.
At Anderson Ranch, the process of printmaking honors tradition, innovation, community and collaboration. We invite you to explore, experiment and expand your visual expression in this captivating environment.

In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.
Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Tradition and Innovation: Woodblock Printmaking
Jimin Lee
Tuition $1,050
Code R1211-22
Students learn how to combine traditional carving processes with digital technology, including inkjet printing and laser-cutting. This workshop refines students’ creative capacities and knowledge in relief printmaking by introducing the use of new materials and expanding the esthetics of this ancient art form. Uniquely designed hands-on demonstrations include file preparations from autographic and photographic image and digital drawing and the use of Washi and Hanji for digital printing and color separations for multi-color block printing. This class utilizes access to the Digital Fabrication Lab in addition to the Patton Print Shop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

Building Plates, Overlapping Color
Sue Oehme
Tuition $1,050
Code R1312-22
During this hands-on, experimental printmaking workshop, students explore many different nontoxic methods of creating intaglio plates, including plexiglass and mat board matrices, as well as solar plates. Color relationships are a prime consideration during the creation of imagery. Students are encouraged to think ahead about printing their plates (together or separately) in color with wiping/rolling techniques to utilize overlapping color areas. Complex color applications merge with various textures to create extraordinary effects and dynamic, multilayered, one-of-a-kind prints.

Cross-pollinate: Blending Printmaking Techniques
Genevieve Lowe
Tuition $1,050
Code R1413-22
Delve into an extensive range of printmaking techniques, exploring the hybrid print. Students incorporate basic intaglio techniques, gum transfers and chine collé. The results are dynamic, multilayered prints that allow for the best of each technique to be celebrated. Students work with both hand-generated and photographic imagery and embrace technical exploration and experimentation. The workshop introduces each technique as a single process procedure, then investigates ways to combine the methods to discover which print qualities are emboldened when combined in a single image. Students produce works that reflect a synthesis of process, layering, composition and ideas.
