Concept
This intensive life drawing workshop, open to students of all experience levels, allows participants to explore the figure through traditional drawing media, with a focus on value, texture, form, contrast, light and shadow, and gesture. In addition to honing our rendering skills, the class addresses the elements of a drawing composition that create narrative: props, fabric patterns, symbolism, and costume. Emphasis is placed on the role that color plays in a drawing, and how powerfully it can impact the meanings behind a narrative image, particularly when working through a surreal lens. The week begins with fast-paced exercises while drawing from a model, and culminates in a longer pose, incorporating costumes, personal objects, and other materials that build a dynamic, multi-layered figurative stage from which the imagination can blossom.

Robert Pruitt
Robert Pruitt works in a variety of materials, with the focus of his practice centered on rendering large scale figurative portraits. His work is in numerous public collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston ; the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University,; the Portland Museum of Art,ME; the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond.

Required Tools and Supplies
- Prohibited supplies: power tools, torches, spray paint, encaustic, turpentine, resin, plastisol, any solvent that isn’t low VOC
- Charcoal pencils - HB, 2B, 4B, 6B (at least 4 of each)
- Soft pastels, assorted colors
- 9" x 12" sketchbook with at least 50 pages - white, tan, or grey**

- White (or light colored) t-shirt for screen printing**

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

The Painting & Drawing Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive artistic practice across a wide range of media. The space provides dedicated work areas, natural light, and technical infrastructure for artists working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and drawing.

The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.

Abstraction: A Process-Oriented Approach

This intermediate-to-advanced painting workshop focuses on developing an abstract language through the exploration of various water-based painting methods. While some students may be looking to shift into abstraction from a representational practice, other participants who have experience creating abstract paintings are encouraged to bring deeper focus and consistency to their imagery and approach. Prompts are provided to foster new ways to develop mark, surface, expression and meaningful color choices.

Acrylic Painting for Teens

In this introductory-level painting workshop for teens, students learn to approach painting through a variety of lenses, from observational to stylized, and embark upon many exercises relating to color, line, and form. Students begin by focusing on painting from observation and learning to record what they see, then explore abstraction, pattern, and developing color fields. We take inspiration from paintings throughout history and gain a knowledge of historical works and take a look at contemporary imagery. Teens come away with a portfolio of paintings to build upon.

Level II
Photography students have a basic understanding of photography principles and technology and are comfortable using an SLR camera in manual mode. New Media students have a basic understanding of video, multimedia or animation software. Students have basic computer skills and are comfortable using a Macintosh computer.

Level III
Photography students have some formal training and significant experience making, capturing and digitally processing images using Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop. New Media students have some formal training in conceptual and technological aspects of video, multimedia, coding or animation and are versed in the appropriate software applications. Students have a portfolio of their artwork.

The Palimpsest Surface: Photography, Ink, and Paint

This workshop immerses students in the creative possibilities of mixed media by integrating photography with both traditional and experimental drawing and painting techniques. Participants work with watercolor, acrylic, India ink, graphite, and pastels to build layered, dynamic surfaces that merge photographic imagery with expressive mark-making. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided projects, students explore image-transfer methods, surface manipulation, and innovative approaches to combining materials. The workshop places strong emphasis on conceptual development, encouraging participants to transform personal, found, or generated photographs into evocative works that blur the line between representation and abstraction. By the end of the week, students create a cohesive series of artworks that demonstrate technical versatility and reflect their individual creative vision.
