Lighting Design with the CNC
Jun 7 - 11, 2021
9AM-5PM
Concept
In this workshop, students learn to use the CNC (computer numerically controlled) Router and Rhino 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software with the objective of producing a small lighting fixture or stand-alone illuminated object. Participants learn how to design for the CNC Router as well as how to integrate some traditional methods alongside digital fabrication techniques. An emphasis is placed on translating three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional toolpaths.
Media
Plywood and kiln-dried lumber, acrylic, LED lighting components, laminated Shoji screen CNC router, laser cutter, 3-D printer, Rhinoceros 3D

Furniture Design & Woodworking
The Furniture Design & Woodworking program at Anderson Ranch draws upon the world of studio furniture, but pushes the boundaries of woodworking by mixing contemporary and traditional techniques and incorporating alternative materials. Summer 2021 offers an inspiring range of workshops for all levels in topics such as cabinetry, wood bending, kinetics and carving.
The Maloof Wood Barn, divided into a machine room, assembly room, and bench room, provides participants the ideal workshop for realizing technical and creative goals. The machine room houses stationary equipment including SawStop table saws, jointers, planers, bandsaws, drill presses, edge sander, disk sander, drum sander, spindle sander, mortiser, radial arm saw, chop saw, router table and multi-router. In the assembly and bench rooms, a library of clamps, hand tools, and hand-held power tools line the walls for student use to complete their woodworking projects.

Lodging & Meals
Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.
Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

This workshop explores sculptural form while creating functional (or not so functional) containers. It expands on the expressive capacities of wood as a medium and the vessel as an engaging and evocative object. Students explore vessels in a range of scales using techniques that lend themselves to the construction of creative containers. Demonstrations include bandsaw boxes, coopering, carving, steam bending and bent lamination. Experienced and beginning woodworkers alike find this "test kitchen" atmosphere a refreshing space in which to work and open up endless design possibilities that provide valuable lessons in the craft of woodworking.
