Painting the Figure Through a Political and Radical Lens

Concept
This workshop for advanced painters explores the fundamental properties of figurative painting and portraiture through the lens of political and historical gestures and poses. The course examines “the figure” in painting, documentary photography, art history and literature, using these examples as sources for live model sessions, studio practice and discussions. Students work on self-directed projects and from live models. They participate in one-on-one and group discussions, as well as individual critiques with the instructor. Students are asked to bring a digital portfolio of recent work to discuss their research, methods and practice.
To attend a Master Class workshop, a portfolio review is due by Friday, February 11th, 2022. Instructions on how to submit your portfolio are as follows:
- Submit digital images of your work in one single PDF (as opposed to individual JPG attachments) via email directly to the Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing and Printmaking, Liz Ferrill at [email protected]
- The single PDF must be less than 10 MB to be considered.
- Include 10 images of 10 works with image identification that lists the title, media, dimensions and year of each image.
- While not required, it is helpful to see an artist statement addressing the images you send.
- Include “Advanced Portfolio Review” in the subject line of your email, as well as the title of the workshop for which you are applying.
- Please provide a phone number where you can be reached and a link to your website.
Submissions that do not follow the requested directions will not be reviewed. To be considered, we must receive portfolios by 5 PM MST Friday, Feb. 11th, 2022. If we receive your materials after Feb. 11th, you will be considered on a space-available basis.
We will email you regarding your status on or before Friday, Feb. 25, 2022. If you are accepted, a deposit of $500 will be required within one week of notification of acceptance to hold your place. Housing will be assigned on a space-available basis upon enrollment.

David Antonio Cruz
David Antonio Cruz uses painting and performance to explore the visibility and intersectionality of brown, black and queer bodies. Cruz is a professor and Concentration Head of Painting at Columbia University School of the Arts. He has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, National Portrait Gallery, ICA Philadelphia, and was awarded the Joan Mitchell Painting and Sculptor Grant. He received his MFA from Yale University.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

The Painting & Drawing Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive artistic practice across a wide range of media. The space provides dedicated work areas, natural light, and technical infrastructure for artists working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and drawing.

Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Advanced Topics in Painting

Master Class This course is designed to improve our work through full immersion in the discourse of contemporary painting. We examine theory and critical dialogue as it pertains to individual practice, and explore the history and craft of paintings within a contemporary context. Through readings and discussion, artists have opportunities to broaden the scope of their practices and continue to hone their artistic voices. This course uses the term “painting” in the most expanded contemporary manner. We engage in individual critiques, group critiques, reading assignments, group discussions, and the creation of new work. Students should bring a digital portfolio of current studio work.

Photography students have some formal training and significant experience making, capturing and digitally processing images using Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop. New Media students have some formal training in conceptual and technological aspects of video, multimedia, coding or animation and are versed in the appropriate software applications. Students have a portfolio of their artwork.

More Than Words: Photography as Creative Nonfiction

This workshop asks students to engage in close readings of image, sound, and text in order to develop their own creative practice. Authors and artists examined include Roy DeCarava, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Dawoud Bey, Tina Campt, Baldwin Lee, Susan Sontag, James Baldwin, Endia Beal, and Joni Mitchell. Students will explore questions such as, How are history, region, identity, social location, sound, and disposition communicated through image? How can narrative be a co-creative endeavor alongside image? How does the body of the photographer figure in images even when not visible? What ethical principles ought to guide visual and narrative storytelling? Class sessions will include writing exercises and peer critiques.

Painterly Quilts

Discover the many possibilities of working in mixed media incorporated with quilting techniques to create colorful and vibrant compositions. With an experimental approach to quilting, students use appliqué, cyanotype, photographic images printed onto fabric, painting and ink, stamping, embroidery, and decorative hand stitching as they focus on pattern, composition, surface texture, and color relationships. While addressing the complexities of the quilted image, we emphasize discovering new ways to piece together compositions, creating formal connections, and incorporating personal and found materials like fabrics, beads, and relics.
