Merging Abstraction With Representation

Jul 25 - 29, 2022

9AM - 5PM

Concept

The mysterious and powerful realm of abstraction and how it can be used as a visual tool when merged with representationalism becomes accessible in this acrylic painting workshop. We delve into the basic visual elements of abstraction through the exploration of pattern, color, composition and fragmentation. Advanced students are encouraged to experiment with surface texture and alternative painting materials as well, and to incorporate representational elements such as photographs and figurative painting. These dynamic combinations result in bold and exciting images that use abstraction as a device to interrupt reality and present it in unique and surprising ways.

Lodging & Meals

Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.

NEW: Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.

We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP Color 2: A Workshop for Artists and Designers Continued

David Hornung

Tuition $695
Code D16W01-22

This second installment of David Hornung’s color class is for students who have taken his first workshop and would like to go deeper. In Color 2 we explore the development of color interrelationships through a variety of mixing strategies and conduct color research into natural and manufactured sources. We also examine specific color applications like progression and the illusion of transparency and study the way color works with shape to create spatial hierarchy in a two-dimensional image. As with the previous class, meetings are on alternate days (MWF) which allows ample time to complete assignments. The materials list is identical to that of Color 1, linked below. The prerequisite for this workshop is David Hornung's class, Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers, click here for details.

Photorealistic Painting

Jennifer J. Lee

Tuition $1,155
Code D0101-22

How does one paint a photorealistic painting? A seemingly difficult task, this workshop simplifies the process so that even someone with little experience in representational painting can achieve a realistic outcome. Students use oil-based paints and a gridding system to map out their imagery as a way to lay out their compositions onto canvas. Participants gain confidence in paint handling and discover the possibilities of using photography as a subject in painting.

This workshop develops a variety of acrylic painting techniques ranging from the very precise and geometric to the more spontaneous and organic. Using these techniques, students learn to push their paintings into new and complex territory while also learning to express a strong voice through their work. In addition to the exploration of hard-edge painting, soft dry brush painting and other techniques, participants discover transparency, opacity and a wide array of possibilities in color. Mixed media is also encouraged, either on the surface or embedded in the paint.
