Mixed Media Collage

Concept
Join this exciting January intensive workshop to merge photography, painting, collage and digital fabrication technologies. We explore contemporary examples of layered mixed media work and delve into formal as well as technical approaches for combining diverse imagery to create a unique visual language. The class combines structured projects with individually-directed works, one-on-one critiques with the instructor, and group feedback. In addition to working in analog collage and painting processes, students use vector drawings and digital images to create shapes, stencils and image transfers with CNC, laser cutting and digital printing on various substrates. The workshop takes place in the wood loft and makes use of the photography/new media labs as well as the FabLab so that students can explore many possibilities for making dynamic and multilayered imagery.
The instructor will be present from 9AM – 12PM each day and students will work independently in the afternoons. Students will have additional access to the Digital Fabrication and Photography & New Media studios during monitor hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9PM.

Leslie Shows
Leslie Shows is a Los Angeles-based artist whose mixed-media works incorporate assemblage, painting, drawing, glass and sculptural relief. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand and power tools, computer access with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

The Ranch Café meal plan that is included with Room and Board fees strives to provide healthy, creative meals that will nourish your artistic creativity. The meal plan includes 5 days of continental breakfasts that will include a hot offering, 5 lunches with a selection of offerings, and 5 dinners.
Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Watercolor: Abstract Leaves

This workshop invites students to find the balance between spontaneity and control within the watercolor medium. Students explore the evolution of abstract form from the observed reality of a singular leaf or a group of leaves. Each student completes a series of work that explores one central subject, focusing on the line, color, structure, and form of leaves. Various experimental techniques and tools that can be utilized to create a finished painting are demonstrated. Activities include presentations of visual images, discussions of abstract painting, and student-instructor consultations.

Yielding to What's in Front of You: Sustained Looking & The Studio Practice

The goal of this painting workshop is to be present in your practice and bring that observational attentiveness to a process that allows for malleability and change. Students come prepared to work on self-directed studio projects, and also bring one completed work to share. Half of each day is spent on independent projects, and the other half exploring prompts, engaging in writing exercises, and participating in group critiques and discussions, as well as individual studio visits. We also spend time figure drawing with a live model, and looking at a range of artworks, to hone our observational muscles and consider critical strategies as painters.

Anderson Ranch’s January Studio Sessions provide artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as some morning group demonstrations and / or critiques. This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition. *Studios are open 24 hours a day with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements. IMPORTANT DETAILS: Students will be responsible for all material costs associated with their projects. Participants who register for multiple consecutive weeks will gain access to the studios on weekends (with the exception of the machine rooms due to safety constraints.)
