Painting: A State of Mind
Jul 24 - 28, 2023
9AM-5PM
Concept
Henry Matisse said, “The essential thing is to work in a state of mind that approaches prayer.” Intermediate and advanced painters examine their current intentions while developing the essential. In one-on-one studio meetings, students are encouraged to notice their process of being and transformation as they negotiate between critical discernment and ‘owning’ this process. In group critiques, we discuss activation through the movement of materials, images, and form, which brings one closer to intention. Can intention and process become the same? How can a ‘flow state’ be achieved? Does a state of mind and action transfer through finished work? We look at artists who have inspired your practice for clues.
Media
Students work in their chosen painting medium, expanding outside of the painting medium is also encouraged

Painting as Metamorphosis: Observe, Examine, Create
Jody Guralnick
Tuition $1,225
Code D0102-24
This class immerses participants in the wild world around us to inspire the process of oil painting. Students examine nature firsthand, using magnifying loupes to inspect their subjects, contemplating life, growth, decay, and regeneration. Using nature as source material, participants read, discuss, observe, and embark on a painting journey. The emphasis of this workshop is to think about painting as a process and movement rather than a fixed form, depicting nature with paint without needing to reproduce observations in a literal way. Melding abstraction and representation, students discover and produce depth, allowing an image to float to the surface. They learn to develop form, mix color, and consider composition, all inspired by what we see around us.
