Concept
Dive into the possibilities of the computer’s extraordinary feats in our digital age. This workshop is ideal for students looking to expand their control animations and processing skills as well as those wanting to use creative coding exported to Real-Time Interactive Projection Mapped Systems. Participants work with Sublime Text 3 to edit code and HYPE Framework. Throughout the week, efficient production techniques are explored.

Joshua Davis
Joshua Davis is an award-winning designer, technologist, author, and artist in new media and is acclaimed for his role in designing the visualization of IBM’s Watson, the intelligent computer program capable of answering questions for the quiz show “Jeopardy!” His work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the Design Museum in London, le Centre Pompidou in France, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, MoMA PS1 in New York, the Cooper-Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum, and others.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Photography & New Media Studio in Aspen / Snowmass
The Photography & New Media Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located in Snowmass Village near Aspen, Colorado, is a professional studio environment designed to support immersive photographic and digital media practice. The facility provides dedicated workspaces, critique areas, and technical infrastructure for artists working in traditional photography, digital imaging, video, and experimental new media.

Photography has always been a vital part of Anderson Ranch, one in which students explore visual storytelling through a variety of contexts and concepts. The program has uniquely evolved to focus on both traditional photography and new media— making it one of the only workshop settings of its kind. Three floors of the Fischer Photography Center house state-of-the-art equipment, including three photography studios, two Mac labs, a traditional darkroom, and a lighting studio with strobe and continuous lighting for photography and video.
All photography workshops are rooted in the same idea—powerful art requires rigorous inquiry of techniques and ideas. We focus on technical skills, content and critical dialog. Students have access to color-managed media labs equipped with 24-inch iMacs, flatbed and film scanners, Epson printers, and cutting-edge software including Adobe Creative Cloud. When appropriate, students utilize strobe and tungsten lighting equipment, seamless backdrops, green screen, audio and video recording equipment and Epson large-format printers.
The Ranch Photography and New Media team creates an inspiring environment, allowing artists of all levels to explore lens-based media and the journey of artistic discovery in the unparalleled setting of the Colorado Rockies.

Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Documentary Photography: The Total Immersion Approach

Explore what it means to work closely and respectfully with people as a documentary photographer. Emphasizing humanistic storytelling, dignity, and genuine connection, participants deepen their approach to documentary photography and photojournalism while actively producing work throughout the week. The focus is on building confidence and developing the skills needed to foster meaningful, lasting relationships with individuals and communities.Participants are encouraged to bring a personal project to develop and will also be assigned a story to document in the field, applying techniques of observation, engagement, and ethical storytelling to create a compelling body of work.

Hybrid Horizons: Collage Across Digital and Traditional Forms

In this workshop, students expand their collage techniques with digital and traditional processes to create simple and layered composite images and constructions. Combining painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, wood, paper and found or fabricated imagery helps tell the story. Students use the laser cutter to cut or engrave paper or other materials and push their imagery further by utilizing the capabilities of the UV printer. Demonstrations include collage, nontoxic resin, laser engraved imagery and cutting, and transfer techniques. Participants have the freedom to explore individual projects with the assistance of the fabrication lab assistants. Discussions include developing content, narrative, and artistic voice through combined techniques.

Between the Mesh: The Hybrid Screen Print

Students explore a wide range of traditional and experimental screen printing techniques, examining the expressive potential of digital and mechanical mark-making, richly layered color, and dynamic variable editions. Processes covered include drawing fluid and screen-filler stencils, photo-chemical stencils created from both hand-drawn and digital imagery, monoprints/monotypes, and the integration of found collage materials — all paired with hybrid approaches that merge analog and digitally produced images.
