Concept

This workshop challenges students to examine the art of cohesive storytelling and narrative, and to work together to create a storyline rooted in personal connections and emotional content. The thrust of the workshop is to help students bring a unique personal voice to their work and take home a new way of seeing their images and the world of documentary photography. Each student works on an individual project, either an ongoing or existing body of work. Students develop skills to conceptualize, make and edit documentary narratives that evoke emotion, empathy and connection between subject and audience. With guidance, each photographer creates a visual narrative on one theme. Works-in-progress are reviewed and new work from individual assignments is discussed. Project ideas and execution are examined as well as obstacles and how to overcome them.

Salwan Georges

Salwan Georges is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist for The Washington Post. In 2020, Salwan was awarded a Pulitzer Prize as part of a staff entry from The Washington Post covering climate change around the world. In 2021, he was named Photographer of The Year by Pictures of the Year International for covering a racial reckoning in Minneapolis, an unforgettable election across the U.S., and a deadly pandemic. His work has been published, exhibited worldwide and added to the Library of Congress.

Photography & New Media

Photography has always been a vital part of Anderson Ranch, one in which students explore visual storytelling through a variety of contexts and concepts. The program has uniquely evolved to focus on both traditional photography and new media— making it one of the only workshop settings of its kind. Three floors of the Fischer Photography Center house state-of-the-art equipment, including three photography studios, two Mac labs, a traditional darkroom, and a lighting studio with strobe and continuous lighting for photography and video.

All Photography workshops are rooted in the same idea—powerful art requires rigorous inquiry of techniques and ideas. We focus on technical skills, content and critical dialog. Students have access to color-managed media labs equipped with 24-inch iMacs, flatbed and film scanners, Epson printers, and cutting-edge software including Adobe Creative Cloud. When appropriate, students utilize strobe and tungsten lighting equipment, seamless backdrops, green screen, audio and video recording equipment and Epson large-format printers.

The Ranch Photography and New Media team creates an inspiring environment, allowing artists of all levels to explore lens-based media and the journey of artistic discovery in the unparalleled setting of the Colorado Rockies.

Lodging & Meals

Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.

Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.

We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

COVID-19 Safety Plan

Anderson Ranch is closely following local and national health and safety guidance. At this time, Anderson Ranch visitors and public program and event participants are not required to show proof of vaccination. Digital Workflow: Capture to Print and What’s In-Between

Every photographer has been there, the image looks great on the computer screen, and somehow, the print doesn’t match our expectations. For some, that means turning on the printer, making a single print, and then immediately shutting it back down, or worse, never attempting the initial print. However, achieving quality prints isn’t as difficult as some believe, but there are specific steps to understand and follow. The act of printing begins long before the “print” button is selected; it starts with the initial capture, requires purposely processing, quality materials, and proper settings. This workshops is designed for students to gain an understanding of the entire printing process, from capture to print. Students learn how the decisions made during capture and editing impact the final output and understand how colors are handled as they move from capture, working, and finally output; in other words, camera, computer, and print.

Post-Photographic Processes

Reach beyond the capture of still images to explore the complex notion of The Digital in a post-photographic world. Using digital images as the starting point, this workshop considers concepts and materials of the digital sphere to explore the world of contemporary image production. Photographs will be treated as the starting point for processes that utilise photogrammetry, 3-D rendering, and composite imaging, resulting in an altogether new still image. Participants learn the basics of digital photographic manipulation using Adobe’s Photoshop, free and open source 3-D software, and basic photogrammetric production.

What’s so Real About Photorealism?

CLICK HERE TO REGISTER Photorealism involves painstaking emulation, by hand and primarily in paint, of the surface qualities of photographic images. When Photorealism emerged in the late 1960s in Europe and the United States, it was an heir to Pop, owing to its typically banal subjects and snapshot aesthetics, and a cousin of Minimalism, sharing a cool affectlessless and machinic finish. Its anomaly was its commitment to the medium of painting, at the moment of conceptual art’s rise, and further to the realist tradition, in the ceaseless wake of abstraction in the 20thcentury. More recently, artists working in a photorealist idiom have provoked the question of the status of the photograph in contemporary art and in broader cultural understandings of truth and fact. This Critical Dialog program seeks to reexamine Photorealism and to trace its lineages in art of the present day—lineages that have zigged and zagged as the status of the photograph has undergone radical shifts and re-imaginings in the realms of fine art, technology, and everyday life. Topics include trompe l'oeil; the pose; representation of people of historically marginalized identities; visual codes of taste and class; and the permeation of personal cameras in everyday life.
