Watercolor: Abstractions in Nature

Concept
This course allows students to capture and interpret nature via the fluid medium of watercolor. Participants learn to simplify and abstract subject matter with minimal marks and a broad spectrum of techniques to create bold and captivating works on paper. They develop color palettes and imagery to stretch their preconceived notions and initial meanings. This workshop guides students through the process of observation, inspiration and translation of the seen world into abstract, graphic and bold watercolors. Participants learn how to economize their mark-making and focus on elements like pattern and color, observing details in nature with a fresh perspective.

Jan Heaton
Jan Heaton is a professional watercolor artist. Her paintings celebrate nature, and then abstractly reach beyond the obvious. Art dealers and galleries in Austin, San Francisco, San Antonio, and Atlanta represent her work. In the classroom, Jan believes all students are individuals with their own story and library of inspiration. Her teaching methods are formed by her belief that everyone learns and makes art in their own way.

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand and power tools, computer access with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritize the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.
The Ranch Café meal plan that is included with Room and Board fees strives to provide healthy, creative meals that will nourish your artistic creativity. The meal plan includes 5 days of continental breakfasts that will include a hot offering, 5 lunches with a selection of offerings, and 5 dinners.
Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

The Figure in Oil Paint

In this workshop, students engage in one of the most interesting and challenging pursuits in representational painting: working with the figure. From color mixing exercises to studies of proportion and composition, students learn to represent the figure quickly and convincingly with oil paint. Further emphasis on paint handling and brushwork helps students to become adept at basic oil painting techniques. In addition to painting from a model, students are guided to create engaging and expressive self-portraits. Even with no past experience, students come away from this workshop with a heightened understanding and skill of this popular but often challenging genre.

Painting as Metamorphosis: Observe, Examine, Create

This class immerses participants in the wild world around us to inspire the process of oil painting. Students examine nature firsthand, using magnifying loupes to inspect their subjects, contemplating life, growth, decay, and regeneration. Using nature as source material, participants read, discuss, observe, and embark on a painting journey. The emphasis of this workshop is to think about painting as a process and movement rather than a fixed form, depicting nature with paint without needing to reproduce observations in a literal way. Melding abstraction and representation, students discover and produce depth, allowing an image to float to the surface. They learn to develop form, mix color, and consider composition, all inspired by what we see around us.

Abstraction in Acrylic

Make your imagery pop in this dynamic painting workshop open to all skill levels. Students are challenged to dive into acrylic on panel while embarking on an abstract approach to image making. Participants explore color theory, patterning methods, and how to use masking tape to create clean, sharp lines and angles. We investigate abstraction and find personal ways to create shape, consider composition and develop a sense of space. Emphasis is placed on hard/soft edge painting techniques and layering processes. Students are encouraged to let their creativity flow, while expanding their artistic techniques in this versatile and accessible painting medium.
