Concept

Explore the strengths and limitations of your current work and practice in order to re-energize them in this one-week, advanced painting and critique workshop—the last in this three-year mentored study. Students have studio space and all approaches are welcome. This workshop provides guidance and resources for participants to expand their skills and further their artistic trajectories. Time is equally divided between critiques and working sessions. This course is for artists who have considerable painting experience, especially those familiar with contemporary practices and theory.

This class is in the third year of a three year program. Please contact Liz Ferrill for more information. lferrill@andersonranch.org.

Portfolio Review Required:

Thank you for your interest in our Level IV painting workshops at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Since a portfolio review is required, the instructions on how to submit your portfolio are provided here.

In order to conduct the required portfolio review, we will need to see digital images of your work in one single PDF (as opposed to individual JPG attachments) sent directly to Anderson Ranch Studio Coordinator, Paul Keefe, via email at pkeefe@andersonranch.org. Please include 10 images of 10 works. Additionally, please include an image identification list that includes: title, media, dimensions and year. While not required, it is helpful to see an artist statement addressing the images you send. Lastly, please provide a phone number where you can be reached and a link to your website. These materials must be submitted as a single PDF (less than 10 MB) to be considered.

Please include “Advanced Portfolio Review” in the subject line of your email, as well as the title of the workshop for which you are applying. Submissions that do not follow the requested directions will not be reviewed. To be considered, Paul Keefe must receive portfolios by 5 PM MST Friday, June 18, 2021. We will email you regarding your status on or before Friday, July 2, 2021. If you are accepted, the full cost of the workshop will be due to hold your place. Housing will be assigned on a space-available basis upon enrollment.

Please note, if we receive your materials after June 18, you will be considered on a space-available basis.

Thank you for your interest in our advanced painting workshops. Please feel free to contact Liz Ferrill with any questions at lferrill@andersonranch.org or 970/924-5076.

Media

Use materials of your choice; typically, students use paint, charcoal or enamel on canvas, but there are no limitations. Students are welcome to bring works already in progress or start with new work during the workshop.

Lodging & Meals

Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.

Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.

We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

This course introduces students to the joy and versatility of gel plate monotype, a low-tech, inventive, forgiving printing method that offers portability as well as kitchen-table convenience. Students make finished prints and experiment with imagery and motifs for other artistic practices such as ceramics and painting. The course also explores an invisible collage technique to combine works on paper into a larger format. Simple tools like brayers, rubber-tipped clay shapers, brushes and cut-paper stencils provide sophisticated results, build up layers and add complexity. Slow-drying paints produce vibrant color, texture and transparency with easy clean-up.

Expressing the Subconscious in Drawing

William Downs

Tuition $1,155
Code D1121-22

Automatic drawing is a process whereby one enters into an altered state of consciousness to explore the worldview of an artist through the medium of the hands. Gesture drawing is one example. Using automatic drawing, an individual can connect with and channel the sensibilities of artists such as Picasso or Cézanne. Each class begins with a lecture and demo on artists and techniques to be explored. Students learn the automatic drawing process and how to merge it with a multitude of media and mixed media.
