Facilitated Studio Practice: Painting & Drawing

Jan 3 - 21, 2022

Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM*

Concept

Anderson Ranch’s Facilitated Studio Practice approach provides artists the opportunity to work on independent projects while receiving regular one-on-one mentoring and critique sessions with Anderson Ranch artistic staff and interns. Each participant receives an assigned studio space, orientation and access to equipment, as well as five hours of weekly technical guidance in the Ranch’s state-of-the-art facilities.

This program affords artists the experience enjoyed by national and international artists who access our state-of-the-art studios. Participants may expand their practices, take artistic risks, try new media or complete works for exhibition.

Applicants must submit project proposals or portfolios for approval. A limited number of participants will be accepted and rigorous health and safety standards, as well as social distancing requirements, must be followed.

*Studios are open 24 hours a day and on weekends for students enrolled in multiple weeks, with limited use of equipment due to safety requirements. Evening monitoring hours are Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7 – 9 PM.

  • Facilitated Studio Practice winter sessions run January 3-21 and participants may register for one, two or all three weeks.
  • Cost is $1,000 per week.
  • Private dorm rooms are available at Anderson Ranch for one, two or three weeks for an additional fee; please inquire for details and availability.

Painting & Drawing

Make, reflect, consider, engage—these are all critical elements of the Painting and Drawing workshops at Anderson Ranch. Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.

The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand and power tools, computer access with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning and projection capabilities. We also offer community engagement through events like our Locals’ Clubs “Sketch Club” where artists engage with the Ranch outside of the workshop setting. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: Possibilities in Painting, Drawing & Collage

Yevgeniya Baras

Tuition $595
Code D45W02-21

This project-based, virtual workshop for beginners guides students to making unique and personal works of art while combining painting, drawing and collage. Technical exploration, perception, development of ideas, intuition, invention, representation and communication are at the core of this workshop. We explore different ways of working with acrylic paint and expand on the idea of what painting is by integrating alternative painting materials. Each painting begins with drawing and collaging in order to generate our own sources of inspiration. Technical demonstrations encourage students to boldly explore different approaches to art making and to foster fearlessness when tackling new materials and processes.

We explore contemporary examples of layered mixed media work and delve into formal as well as technical approaches for combining diverse imagery to create a unique visual language. The class combines structured projects with individually-directed works, one-on-one critiques with the instructor, and group feedback. In addition to working in analog collage and painting processes, students use vector drawings and digital images to create shapes, stencils and image transfers with CNC, laser cutting and digital printing on various substrates. The workshop takes place in the wood loft and makes use of the photography/new media labs as well as the FabLab so that students can explore many possibilities for making dynamic and multilayered imagery. The instructor will be present from 9AM - 12PM each day and students will work independently in the afternoons. Students will have additional access to the Digital Fabrication and Photography & New Media studios during monitor hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9PM.
