Aug 15 - 19, 2022

Concept

This mixed-media workshop, open to students of all levels, experiments with works on paper, develops perceptive drawing skills and explores various media combinations. This workshop also introduces students to safe, non-toxic methods in printmaking to combine with drawing that don’t require a press and that can be applied outside of the studio. Participants use familiar materials in unconventional ways to find unexpected results and foster new ideas.

Multiple traditional and alternative methods in both drawing and printmaking such as frottage, image transfer, mediums, alternative drawing media, staining and altering the paper surface, pushing the boundaries of materials

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.

The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand and power tools, computer access with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning and projection capabilities. We also offer community engagement through events like our Locals’ Clubs “Sketch Club” where artists engage with the Ranch outside of the workshop setting. Lodging & Meals

Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.

Summer 2022 workshop participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. Studio program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch.

We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Accessing the Abstract

Rema Ghuloum

Tuition $1,200
Code D0407-22

In this rigorous and productive painting course, we explore the generative elements of our individual and shared visual language as it relates to abstract painting. Through daily assignments, prompts and a series of one-on-one and group critiques, we focus on how to access our inherent intentions in regards to mark making, brushwork and color and build on our ideas. Students interested in exploring the emotive qualities of paint and/or the desire to delve into abstraction in their paintings are welcome. Additionally, with these exercises, we cultivate our work alongside each other and hone our language to constructively conceive of and discuss our varying artistic processes and what inspires our work to develop.
